Have you ever seen a dog jet ski before? Well, just meet Steve and his dog Scuba. Before you go there, no, this is not AI. Steve and Scuba are real, living in Australia, jet skiing nearly everyday together on their 2018 Yamaha VXR WaveRunner. This is their story.
“I had always been a bit of a lone wolf going out on the JetSki mostly by myself , heading out early mornings to watch the sunrise, and get my meditation and connection with the universe and all the marine life in. There’s nothing like being out on the ocean at sunrise,” Steve tells The Wake Edit. “Then one day, I thought how cool it would be to have a buddy in the form of a four-legged friend, and I manifested Scuba.”
But why Scuba? “People sometimes called me Scuba Steve because I dive, and I thought now there could be Scuba and Steve. The rest is history. We don’t do it all for the likes or followers; we do it for the love between man and dog and the ocean.” Naturally, one of the questions that we are all asking is how the hell do you get a dog to ride a jet ski?
“I started training scuba when he was a puppy 4 years ago. I started slow, by putting him on the jet ski while in the garage and giving him treats. Eventually I took him out on the water just by letting him sit on the ski in the water, and without even trying, he started to stand up on the front of the handle bars. Soon he was learning how to stay on. Only one time he fell off, and I quickly turned around as I didn’t want him taken by a shark,” Steve adds.
Steve and Scuba are based in Brisbane, Australia, so while you won’t catch him around the Florida coast everyday, he is making his way around the globe. “In five years time, we would like to be sponsored by dog brands. This year in Australia we have been featured in the world famous Top Dog film festival, which I believe travels to different countries, including America.” He also attributes a lot of his growth to Hector and Sofla Nick, as “our brothers in the USA that have supported us.” While Steve dreams of making his way around the world, he just wants to “wave to people in cafes and restaurants, and spread joy and positive vibes.
