2016 Swim Trends Making a Comeback
Haven’t You Heard? We’re Back in the Teens.

If you’re chronically online, like me, you’ll know that 2026 has kicked off with a lookback to 2016. Some of Gen Z’s favorites like fidget spinners, Kylie Jenner Lip Kits, and more were birthed in 2016, and a decade later, are making a comeback. The internet is literally going feral for nostalgia, with TikTok searches for “2016” skyrocketing, and creators using the year’s namesake in over 55 million videos.
As someone who peaked in 2016 (not actually, but it felt that way), I’m all for the nostalgia. There’s really no better way to start the year off than to unearth the 2016 swimwear brands and trends that are going to make a big comeback in 2026.
The OG Neoprene Bikini

If you were on Instagram in 2016, you couldn’t scroll for more than a minute without seeing Triangl’s iconic neoprene bikinis. Their signature two-pieces—color-blocked, sporty, and always outlined in bold black piping—were (and now are) the ultimate status symbol for pool parties, boat days, and #vacay posts. In 2026, Triangl is back in a big way, riding the nostalgia wave with re-releases of their most iconic sets and new drops inspired by the original “It Girl” era. Neoprene is not only durable and flattering, but it also gives off that unmistakable 2010s vibe—think Gigi Hadid, Coachella, and endless summer. This year, Triangl’s “Classic Collection” is trending on TikTok, with creators unboxing their old sets and styling them with modern accessories like chunky slides and mirrored sunglasses (more on these later). The brand has even launched a “2016 Edit” featuring throwback colors (hello, bubblegum pink and tangerine).
Billabong’s Back, Baby
If there’s one brand that defines surf-core and California-core, it’s Billabong—think sun-faded graphic tees, classic board shorts, and those instantly recognizable wave logos. Billabong is back at the top of the trend cycle, riding the nostalgia wave with a new generation of fans and a fresh take on their vintage classics. Billabong’s resurgence is all about authenticity and heritage as creators like @mark_boutilier have pointed out — Billabong’s roots in real surf culture make it the perfect brand for the “early 2010s California” aesthetic that will dominate spring and summer. Their vintage surf shirts are now collector’s items, and the brand’s recent capsule collections have sold out in hours—especially the reissued “Retro Wave” tees.
Board Shorts are King

Board shorts (instead of bikini bottoms) are going to be it for this summer. And, we’re already late to the trend with brands like Revolve and Free People carrying re-imagined micro-mini boardshorts. We’ll see these in Y2K inspired colors like neons, bold color blocks, and even more 2010s, reversible colorways. Undoubtedly a must-have for the die-hard jetskiers or water lovers who want to keep everything in place.
Cutouts, High Neck-Lines, and Palm Print—Oh My!
If you’re not sold on the Triangl trend, don’t worry. There are three other iconic 2016 swimwear styles that might suit you (pun intended). Cut-out one pieces and bikinis were a 2016 favorite, and they’re back with even more creative shapes and placements.
Tropical palm and banana leaf prints were everywhere in the 2010s, from swimwear to towels. The print is back, now with a retro filter—think neon greens and pinks, and even matching sets for couples and friends.
High neckline bikinis were my favorite. If you don’t get the vision, just imagine a halter bathing suit top. Party on the bottom, and professional on top.
Bold, Kitschy Accessorizing

2016 was for the accessory girlies *think reflective sunglasses and shimmery flash tattoos. These trends are back for 2026, and the top of your list should be to revive those retro colored-lens sunglasses. If you can’t scrounge up an old pair, shop brands like Gentle Monster and Oakley, who are releasing Y2K style, reflective and funky color ways.
And to really drive home that reflective and iridescent 2016 vibe, let’s bring back flash tattoos for your next beach trip. They’re resurfacing as a playful, nostalgic accessory for pool parties and boat days (and they’re cheaper than jewelry, while giving you that polished look).
And Finally, Platforms
To tie your 2016 swim look together, go for a chunky, platform slide like Adidas Adilette or Fenty Puma’s. These were the go-to for poolside lounging. If you’re looking for something a little higher end, the Gucci platform rubber poolside (and anything rubber or jelly for that matter) are a chic day to night option.
