Once a premier vacation spot for America’s elite during the Gilded Age, it’s now a choice summer getaway drawing in everyone from adventurers to families to wedding parties. During my years in Providence, I spent many a sunny day laying out on First or Second Beach and strolling Newport’s cobblestoned streets. Here’s how I’d spend a perfect day there.
9:00 am: Start Your Day at a Chic Waterfront Inn in Newport, Rhode Island
Newport is home to a number of polished yet charming stays, including The Chanler at Cliff Walk, a famed mansion with 20 accommodations, two Michelin Keys, and a prime location overlooking the ocean. Each guest room is inspired by a different period and place, from English Tudor to Greek Revival to colonial Williamsburg. Castle Hill Inn, a picturesque 33-room stay dating back to the 19th century, is perched over Narragansett Bay on 40 acres of land. Rooms feature gas fireplaces, antique furniture, and house-made chocolate chip cookies left on your nightstand each night. Both inns offer top-notch hospitality and several incredible dining options—you can’t go wrong with either.
10:00 am: Indulge in Viral Coffee and Pastries
Despite being far from campus, social media darling The Nitro Bar was a mainstay of my college experience in Providence—the only coffee shop my friends would ever Uber for. Once a pop-up coffee cart, The Nitro Bar is now a local chain with three brick-and-mortar locations in Providence and Newport (and a fourth and fifth brewing in Providence’s Fox Point and New York City). If you’re feeling sweet, pair the caramelized banana latte with a slice of decadent chocolate chip banana loaf. The on-tap salted honey latte is another popular option. For a heartier breakfast, try their pizza bagel, a grown-up Bagel Bite topped with n’duja and hot honey.
11:00 am: Enjoy the Sun, Sand, and Surf
Easton’s Beach, also known as First Beach, is the largest public beach in Newport, spanning nearly a mile. Rent beach chairs and umbrellas to lounge out on the sand—or opt for gear like surfboards, paddle boards, and wetsuits if you’re feeling more active. If the weather is less than desirable, head to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, which was renovated just last year. In the museum, see historic tennis equipment, artifacts from Hall of Famers, and rotating digital exhibits on subjects like tennis fashion and Black tennis pioneers.
1:00 pm: Grab Classic New England Seafood
Set steps from Easton Beach, no-frills seafood counter Flo’s Clam Shack has been serving its iconic clam cakes since 1936. Aside from the must-try clams, pick up a “No-Nonsense Lobsta Roll Platter” and a cup of homemade “Chowda” (I’m partial to New England style) to enjoy in the restaurant or on the beach.
2:00 pm: Walk a 3.5-Mile Paved Coastal Trail
Work your way from north to south on Newport Cliff Walk, the first National Recreation Trail in New England, which puts you squarely between the Atlantic and Newport’s famed Gilded Age mansions. Walking the entire trail takes about three hours, but for an easier stroll, stick to the northern half. Either way, make a stop at the grandest mansion of them all, The Breakers, built as a summer residence for the Vanderbilts in 1895. To see the 70 opulent rooms inside, be sure to purchase timed tickets in advance.
5:00 pm: Cool Off with a Pre-Dinner Sweet Treat
Back downtown, head to Get the Scoop for small-batch, handcrafted ice cream in flavors like maple walnut, lemon, Moon Mist (a nostalgic, fruity Canadian flavor), and apple pie à la mode, which has entire freshly baked apple pies blended into every batch. Cone in hand, stroll down bustling Thames Street, which is lined with shops, cafés, and colonial houses.
7:00 pm: Dine at a Historic Newport Institution
Originally opened as a tavern in 1673, White Horse Tavern is the oldest operating restaurant in the United States. Today, alongside an extensive wine list, it serves elevated staples like beef wellington, seafood paella, scotch eggs, and of course, New England clam chowder. The red-paneled, gambrel-roofed exterior gives way to white tablecloths, polished dark green walls, and a classic fireplace inside, perfect for a date night or nice family sit-down. Other standout options downtown include “freestyle” Italian restaurant Giusto and boutique steakhouse Thames Street Kitchen.
9:00 pm: End Your Night with Drinks and Live Music
One Pelham East is a lively, family-owned bar with nightly live music known for its regular dueling piano shows—interactive events where two pianists perform audience requests. With three floors, plenty of pub games, and Newport’s largest late-night menu, this locally-beloved spot is the perfect high-energy way to close out your day. For a more intimate evening, head to Bar 12, a craft cocktail lounge with a crisp, modern interior serving creative drinks (like “Aloupe to Mexico,” their twist on a mezcal sour) and classic bar snacks.
How to Ride in Newport
Newport is best known for its sailing, but the protected waters of Narragansett Bay are also the perfect place to jet ski.
